It thrives in habitats where the water table is high, such as fens, marshes, and the edges of ponds. Its distribution is closely linked to its strict requirement for nutrient-poor and acidic environmental conditions.
Botanically, Sphagnum platyphyllum is characterized by its broad, concave branch leaves and a relatively robust stem structure that lacks specialized internal conduction tissues. It reproduces primarily through vegetative fragmentation, which makes it an ideal candidate for cultivation in controlled bog-like environments. In commercial production, shade cloth is frequently utilized to mimic the natural forest cover and prevent desiccation of the moss surface.
