Sphagnum tenellum, commonly known as the delicate bog moss, belongs to the Sphagnaceae family. This species is a small, pale-colored moss that forms low-growing, dense carpets. It is recognized as a pioneer species in wetland successions and serves as a fundamental component of peatland ecosystems.

The origin and distribution of this moss extend across the temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It thrives in nutrient-poor, acidic conditions, typically found in ombrotrophic mires, wet heathlands, and arctic tundra. Its presence is an indicator of highly saturated, acidic habitats with minimal mineral drainage.

Botanically, the species is defined by its small, soft stems and branches arranged in distinct fascicles. The presence of specialized hyaline cells allows the plant to absorb massive quantities of water, maintaining the humidity level of its environment. Its delicate structure makes it sensitive to drying and mechanical disturbances, requiring stable environmental conditions.

Regarding agrotechnics, successful cultivation requires an acidic substrate (pH 3–4.5) and constant access to pure, mineral-free water. Light levels should be managed to avoid scorching, as the plant prefers partial shade. Propagation is achieved through vegetative fragmentation, where small clumps are placed on a moist, nutrient-poor substrate to expand.
