Antholysis is a plant condition characterized by the abnormal development of floral organs, where parts of the flower are transformed into vegetative structures such as leaves or stems. This profound morphological change indicates a serious disruption in the plant's hormonal balance and genetic regulation of flowering.
The causative agents are often viral pathogens that interfere with normal organogenesis during the bud development stage. This type of disease is classified as a developmental disorder, usually transmitted by insect vectors such as whiteflies or aphids, which introduce the pathogen directly into the plant's vascular tissues.
The disease is commonly documented in various crops, including cassava (Manihot esculenta). The primary signs of infection include the greening of petals, the proliferation of floral parts, and the emergence of shoot-like structures from the center of the flower. These symptoms render the flower sterile, preventing pollination and seed production.
Conditions favorable for the development of antholysis include high populations of insect vectors and environmental factors that promote their migration. Rapid spread occurs in regions with sustained warm temperatures and dense planting, where the virus can easily move between infected and healthy hosts throughout the growing season.
