Arthoniomycetes is a diverse class of fungi belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It is crucial for agronomists to distinguish these organisms from true plant pathogens. The vast majority of Arthoniomycetes are lichenized fungi or saprotrophs that live on the bark of trees and shrubs, playing an ecological role rather than a parasitic one.
The biology of these fungi is defined by their unique fruit bodies called hysterothecia, which are often elongated or branched. They produce multi-septate ascospores, which are spread by wind or water. These morphological characteristics allow them to colonize substrates such as bark, rock, or leaves, without causing structural damage to the host plant.
These fungi do not cause plant diseases. They do not infect vascular systems, disrupt photosynthesis, or induce necrosis in plant tissues. Consequently, they are not considered a threat to agricultural productivity or crop health. In many ecosystems, they are actually beneficial, contributing to the biodiversity of the orchard or forest floor.
The development of Arthoniomycetes is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are typical for tree bark surfaces. They are often found in mature, stable environments. Because they are not parasitic, their presence is not associated with economic damage or yield loss in farming systems.
No chemical or biological control measures are required for these fungi. In terms of orchard management, maintaining healthy bark and preventing excessive lichen buildup is usually handled through standard horticultural practices, such as proper pruning and keeping the orchard well-ventilated, which helps maintain the natural health of the trees.
