Aspergillus sydowii is a microscopic mold fungus belonging to the Ascomycota division. In agronomy, this pathogen is recognized as a cause of secondary infections that affect both growing plants and stored agricultural commodities. While primarily a saprotroph, the fungus can exhibit aggressive behavior under favorable conditions, leading to the rapid decay of plant tissues.
This pathogen infects a wide variety of agricultural crops. Cereal grains (wheat, corn, barley), vegetable crops, tubers, and oilseeds are particularly vulnerable. The fungus thrives on organic debris in the soil, allowing it to easily spread to seeds or harvested produce within storage facilities.
Symptoms of infection include the appearance of characteristic mold colonies ranging from blue-green to grayish hues. Infected grain typically displays discoloration, a musty odor, and a significant decrease in germination rate. In high-humidity environments, plant tissues soften rapidly and become covered in a visible layer of mycelium and spores.
The primary environmental triggers for the development of Aspergillus sydowii are high relative humidity (above 75%) and temperatures ranging from 20 to 30°C. The fungus is highly resilient to temperature fluctuations and can persist in the soil and on crop residues for extended periods, remaining viable until conditions favor colonization.
The economic impact includes the spoilage of produce, reduction in market quality, and the accumulation of mycotoxins, which pose serious health risks to humans and livestock. Effective management requires maintaining strict ventilation in storage areas, applying fungicidal seed treatments, and ensuring the thorough removal of plant residues from fields to prevent spore buildup in the soil.
