Bark cracking in Citrus spp. is a significant physiological disorder characterized by vertical fissures in the outer bark of trunks and main scaffold branches. This condition is primarily non-pathogenic, often triggered by a mismatch between the growth rate of the inner xylem and the elasticity of the protective cork layers, frequently exacerbated by environmental stressors.
The disorder affects virtually all types of citrus, including lemons, oranges, and limes. It is particularly prevalent in young, vigorously growing trees and orchards where management practices, such as irrigation and fertilization, are applied inconsistently throughout the growing season, causing physiological stress within the tree's vascular system.
The clinical symptoms include visible longitudinal cracks that may range from superficial skin fissures to deep wounds reaching the wood. Often, the tree responds by exuding gummosis—a viscous, amber-colored sap—as a localized defense mechanism. Left unaddressed, these fissures become vulnerable entry points for pathogens like Phytophthora, leading to secondary fungal infections.
Several critical factors contribute to the incidence of bark cracking:
- Rapid fluctuations in soil moisture leading to sudden changes in turgor pressure.
- Excessive nitrogen application that forces premature or overly rapid vegetative growth.
- Extreme temperature variations causing thermal expansion and contraction (sunscald).
- Inadequate protection of the trunk from intense solar radiation.
Protection and preventive strategies focus on maintaining steady physiological growth. Growers should implement consistent irrigation schedules and monitor nitrogen levels to prevent "growth spurts." Trunk protection, such as white latex paint application, helps mitigate thermal stress. If cracking occurs, disinfecting the area with copper-based fungicides followed by the application of horticultural wound sealant is essential to promote healing and prevent further infection.
