Description
Citrus exocortis (Citrus exocortis viroid, CEVd) is a devastating plant disease caused by a viroid, which is a small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecule lacking a protein coat. Classified within the Pospiviroidae family and Cocadviroid genus, this pathogen is characterized by its high structural stability and ability to hijack the plant's replication machinery to propagate itself systemically throughout the host tissue.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various citrus species, most notably lemons, grapefruits, and certain oranges. The disease is particularly severe when these scions are grafted onto susceptible rootstocks such as Poncirus trifoliata. The hallmark symptom is the scaling and peeling of the bark on the trunk and primary branches, which gives the infected tree a ragged, bark-shedding appearance that severely inhibits the tree's vigor.
The biological cycle of CEVd is strictly dependent on mechanical transmission. Unlike many viruses, it does not rely on insect vectors such as aphids or whiteflies. The viroid spreads through the sap contaminated by infected plant tissue, which is transferred to healthy trees via pruning tools, grafting knives, and other maintenance equipment that have not been adequately sterilized between uses.
Environmental conditions, particularly ambient temperature, play a significant role in symptom expression. While the viroid can persist in a latent, asymptomatic state for extended periods, warmer temperatures tend to accelerate its replication and subsequent physiological impact on the host. Chronic infection leads to stunted tree growth, reduced fruit yield, and decreased nutrient transport, eventually compromising the economic viability of the entire orchard.
Since there are no curative chemical treatments for viroid infections in citrus, management focuses on strict phytosanitary protocols to contain and prevent the spread of the pathogen. Key strategies include:
- Sourcing virus-indexed or certified pathogen-free nursery stock.
- Sterilizing all pruning and grafting tools using bleach or thermal disinfection.
- Implementing rigorous inspection schedules to identify and rogue infected trees.
- Utilizing resistant or tolerant rootstock varieties to minimize the impact of exposure.
