Taxonomically, the causative agents belong to the Fungi kingdom, often categorized within the Ascomycota division. These pathogens specifically attack various citrus hosts including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. The infection is characterized by the appearance of dry, sunken necrotic spots on the bark, which eventually crack and become entry points for secondary wood-rotting fungi or boring insects.
The biology of the pathogen relies on environmental humidity to trigger spore production. The life cycle involves the formation of fruiting bodies called pycnidia, which release conidia during periods of rain or high moisture. These spores are dispersed by water splashes or wind, landing on susceptible bark surfaces where they germinate and colonize the host tissue.
