The primary pathogens involved include species of Rhizopus, Aspergillus, and Botrytis, which thrive in environments where moisture levels remain high for an extended period during the curing process.
The disease primarily impacts tobacco crops during the initial stages of air-curing. As the leaf cells begin to die or dry, any interruption in the drying cycle creates an ideal substrate for fungal growth. If the leaf remains moist for too long, it serves as a nutrient source for these destructive fungi.
Symptoms of barn rot often appear as water-soaked, dark lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these areas become soft and pulpy, often exuding a foul, musty odor. A fuzzy mold growth, varying in color from white to grey or brown, frequently develops over the surface of the affected areas, leading to rapid tissue decay.
