Description

Beet yellows is a destructive viral disease caused by the Beet yellows virus (BYV). This pathogen affects the phloem tissues of susceptible plants, causing severe systemic stress and disrupting the translocation of nutrients, which significantly impairs the plant's metabolic capacity.

The virus has a notable impact on several agricultural crops, most importantly fodder beet and lettuce. Beyond these primary hosts, the virus frequently survives in various weed species within the Chenopodiaceae family, which act as secondary reservoirs throughout the growing season.

The visual symptoms typically appear on mature, older leaves. The foliage becomes yellow or orange, thickened, and brittle, often rolling downwards. As the infection progresses, the photosynthetic area decreases, leading to stunted growth, reduced root size, and diminished yields in affected fields.

Transmission occurs through insect vectors, primarily aphids such as Myzus persicae. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plant tissues and transmit it to healthy crops within minutes. The rapid multiplication of aphid populations during warm weather poses a high risk of widespread infection.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the impact of the virus. Key strategies include early monitoring for aphid colonization, timely application of insecticides to break the transmission cycle, controlling wild host weeds in field margins, and utilizing resistant cultivars where possible.
