Description

Beet yellows, caused by the Beet yellows virus (BYV) of the genus Closterovirus, represents a major viral challenge for sugar beet cultivation globally. This pathogen specifically targets the Chenopodiaceae family, severely impacting the physiological functions of sugar, table, and fodder beet varieties.

The primary diagnostic symptom is a progressive yellowing of older leaves, starting from the leaf tips and spreading inward. Infected leaves often become brittle, thickened, and sometimes necrotic, while the lower surface may become covered in a sticky honeydew secreted by insect vectors, leading to secondary fungal growth.

The virus relies entirely on insect vectors for transmission, with the peach-potato aphid (Myzus persicae) being the most prominent. It follows a persistent transmission cycle, meaning the aphid must feed on an infected plant for a specific duration to acquire and subsequently transmit the virus to healthy plants.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease spread; warm and dry seasons accelerate aphid reproduction and migration. Reservoirs such as overwintering beet seed crops and wild weeds play a vital part in maintaining the virus life cycle, acting as the primary source of infection in the early stages of the growing season.

In severe cases, the photosynthetic efficiency of the crop drops significantly, leading to yield losses of up to 50 percent, alongside a notable decline in the quality of the raw material.
