Description
Northern corn leaf spot is caused by the fungal pathogen Bipolaris zeicola. This disease primarily affects maize and is characterized by the formation of various types of lesions on the leaves, sheaths, and ears, depending on the specific race of the pathogen present in the field.
The symptoms appear as small, tan-to-brown lesions that often develop a distinct margin or concentric zonation. As the infection progresses, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to significant leaf blighting. In severe cases, the entire canopy may appear scorched, which severely restricts the plant's capacity for photosynthesis during grain filling.
The disease development is heavily favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. The fungal spores (conidia) are spread by wind and splashing rain, allowing the infection to move rapidly through a field when temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C. High moisture levels on the leaf surface are essential for spore germination and successful colonization of the host tissue.
The impact of this disease on crop yield can be substantial, particularly in susceptible hybrids. By reducing the green leaf area, the fungus limits nutrient accumulation in the kernels, resulting in reduced test weight and smaller grains. Furthermore, the infection of ears can lead to mold development, which lowers the overall quality and marketability of the harvested corn.
Integrated management is the most effective approach to control this pathogen. Producers should prioritize the use of resistant hybrids and crop rotation to break the disease cycle. Tillage practices that bury infected crop residue help reduce the primary inoculum load. During the growing season, timely scouting and the application of foliar fungicides can protect the crop if environmental conditions remain conducive to disease spread.
