The disease is caused by the fungus Asteridiella perseae, commonly known as a type of sooty mold. This pathogen typically colonizes the surface of leaves, stems, and fruits, functioning as an epiphyte that thrives on the protective secretions left by sucking insects.

It affects various agricultural crops, with avocado, mango, and industrial hemp being primary hosts. The presence of the fungus is frequently correlated with the infestation density of insects like aphids, scales, or whiteflies that produce honeydew.

The primary symptom is the appearance of a dark, velvety or sooty black coating on the plant foliage. While the fungus does not typically penetrate the internal tissues of the host, the thick layer of fungal mycelium effectively acts as a physical barrier against sunlight, hindering the plant's photosynthetic capability.

The development of Asteridiella perseae is favored by warm, humid environments and poor air circulation within the canopy. The fungus uses honeydew as a nutrient source to proliferate, which explains why the disease outbreaks are usually observed after heavy pest colonization in the orchard or field.

Effective management strategies should focus on hygiene and pest control. First, eliminate the source of honeydew by managing the insect population.
