This fungus acts as a parasite primarily affecting Cannabis sativa, leading to the development of symptomatic dark fungal colonies on the foliage and stems of the host plant.
The primary symptom of an infection by this pathogen is the appearance of a dark, velvet-like fungal mat on the surface of plant tissues. This growth often interferes with normal gas exchange and photosynthesis, effectively reducing the plant's ability to produce energy. While it often colonizes plants already stressed or affected by insect secretions, it can become a primary concern in humid environments.
The biology and lifecycle of Schiffnerula cannabis are heavily dependent on environmental variables. Fungal spores serve as the primary inoculum, spreading through wind currents, water splashes, and physical contact with contaminated equipment.
