Meliola mangiferae is a fungal plant pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the family Meliolaceae. As an obligate epiphyte, this fungus typically colonizes the leaf surfaces of tropical and subtropical woody plants. It is commonly associated with the development of sooty mold, a condition that occurs when the fungus feeds on the sugary secretions left behind by sap-sucking insects.
The primary host for this pathogen is the mango tree (Mangifera indica). Infection results in the appearance of dark, felt-like patches that cover the leaves, twigs, and sometimes the fruit. While the pathogen primarily lives on the surface, it significantly impacts the host by blocking light, which interferes with photosynthesis and hampers the tree’s overall vigor and fruit production quality.
The life cycle of Meliola mangiferae is heavily dependent on favorable environmental conditions. The fungus reproduces through ascospores, which are dispersed by wind and rain splashes. Once the spores land on a host leaf, especially one contaminated with honeydew from insects like scales or aphids, the fungus begins to grow and firmly attach itself using structures called hyphopodia.
Optimal conditions for this fungus include high relative humidity and warm temperatures. Because it thrives on honeydew, its proliferation is often directly proportional to the density of insect pest populations. In poorly managed orchards where air circulation is restricted by thick foliage, the spread of the fungus can lead to significant aesthetic and physiological damage to the crop.
Effective management and control strategies focus on integrated pest management and cultural practices:
- Strict control of sap-sucking insects to eliminate the food source (honeydew).
- Regular pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration within the tree canopy.
- Sanitation practices to remove heavily infected plant parts that serve as inoculum sources.
- Application of approved protective fungicides when environmental conditions favor pathogen spread.
