Black raspberry streak

Description

Black raspberry streak is a serious viral disease primarily affecting Rubus species, characterized by the appearance of dark, linear lesions on the canes. This virus interferes with the systemic functions of the plant, often leading to a gradual decline in vigor and eventual death of the affected canes or the entire plant.

The disease primarily infects Rubus idaeus (common raspberry) and its close relatives. Once established within a planting, the virus acts systemically, meaning it persists in the plant tissues indefinitely, necessitating rigorous management strategies to keep the virus from spreading further.

Symptoms typically manifest as dark purple or brownish-red streaks running along the length of the new canes. As the infection progresses, leaves may become chlorotic or distorted, and the overall plant growth becomes stunted. Fruit yield is significantly reduced, with berries becoming crumbly and flavorless.

Transmission occurs mainly through the movement of the aphid vector, Amphorophora agathonica, which carries the virus from infected plants to healthy ones during feeding. The spread is facilitated by warm growing conditions, which promote high aphid activity and rapid colonization across the raspberry rows.

Since there is no cure for this viral infection, growers must rely on strict prevention and sanitation measures.

  • Start new plantings with certified virus-free nursery stock.
  • Implement effective integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations.
  • Rogue and destroy symptomatic plants immediately upon detection.
  • Maintain adequate spacing between old and new plantings to prevent virus transmission.
