Description
Causative agent and disease type. The disease is caused by the fungus Brunneosphaerella protearum, an ascomycete pathogen responsible for foliar spot disease. It primarily attacks the epidermal tissue of host plants, leading to localized necrotic lesions. The pathogen completes its life cycle within the host tissues, utilizing specialized reproductive structures to ensure persistence and dispersal.
Host range. The pathogen is highly specific to the Proteaceae family. It predominantly affects various species and cultivars of the genus Protea, which are economically significant in the cut-flower industry. While wild plants can be affected, commercial nurseries are the most susceptible due to the high density of planting and frequent human handling.
Symptoms and signs. Initial infection manifests as small, circular, dark-colored spots on the leaves. As the lesion expands, it often develops a characteristic necrotic center surrounded by a darker, chlorotic halo. Severe infestations can cause significant leaf blight, resulting in premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a reduction in the aesthetic and commercial quality of the foliage.
Development and spread conditions. The development of Brunneosphaerella protearum is heavily dependent on moisture and humidity. Spores are typically dispersed via water splash—either from rain or overhead irrigation. High-humidity environments, combined with poor air circulation, create a conducive atmosphere for the spores to germinate and colonize new tissue quickly.
Control and prevention measures. Effective management of the disease relies on integrated crop management practices:
- Rigorous sanitation: pruning and destroying infected leaves to reduce the inoculum load.
- Improving airflow: spacing plants appropriately to prevent microclimates with high humidity.
- Water management: switching from overhead to drip irrigation to keep foliage dry.
- Chemical control: applying registered fungicides preventatively during seasons with frequent rainfall.
- Biosecurity: ensuring all propagation material is certified disease-free.
