Description
Bud rot, primarily associated with the Graphium fungus, represents a devastating condition for various palm species, especially the coconut palm. The disease targets the apical meristem, effectively halting the palm's ability to produce new foliage and eventually resulting in the death of the entire tree.
The causative agent belongs to the genus Graphium and functions as a destructive necrotrophic parasite. Once the spores penetrate the soft tissues of the bud, the fungus colonizes the crown, breaking down essential plant tissues through enzymatic secretion and leading to systemic necrosis.
Early symptoms include the chlorosis and wilting of the spear leaf (the youngest, unopened leaf). As the infection progresses, the central leaves collapse, turn brown, and become necrotic. In advanced stages, the bud turns into a foul-smelling, decaying mush, which often attracts secondary pests and accelerates total collapse.
High humidity, stagnant air, and frequent rainfall are critical factors for the rapid propagation of Graphium spores. Poorly managed plantations with dense canopy structures provide an ideal microclimate for the fungus to spread, especially when the trees have sustained prior mechanical wounds.
Effective management requires a proactive approach centered on field sanitation. This includes the immediate removal of severely infected palms to reduce the inoculum load in the orchard. Integrated pest management, particularly controlling beetles that cause structural damage to the crown, is essential to deny the pathogen entry points into the palm's core.
