Description

The causative agent of this condition is the yeast-like fungus Candida parapsilosis. While traditionally considered a human pathogen, it has been identified as an emerging threat in agriculture, capable of infecting plant tissues that are already weakened or damaged by environmental factors.

The disease primarily affects fruit and vegetable crops, especially those with high sugar content or succulent tissues. Crops such as grapes, apples, and tomatoes are at higher risk when exposed to warm and humid conditions that facilitate the germination of fungal spores on the plant surface.

Symptoms of infection are usually characterized by the rapid breakdown of plant cells, leading to soft rot. Visible signs include a creamy or off-white fungal colony growing on the surface of the fruit. In advanced stages, the infected areas emit a sour, yeasty odor, signaling the rapid metabolic activity of the fungus within the plant tissue.

Optimal conditions for disease development include high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. The spread of the fungus is frequently linked to mechanical damage caused by insects, which creates favorable entry points for the yeast. Improper storage conditions, such as poor ventilation and high humidity, significantly accelerate the spread of the pathogen.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include:

  • Rigorous pest control to prevent tissue damage.
  • Proper sanitation in storage facilities.
  • Careful handling during harvest to avoid surface abrasions.
  • Monitoring environmental parameters in warehouses to suppress fungal growth.
