Description
Ceratiomyxa (the Ceratiomyxaceae family) refers to a group of myxomycetes, commonly known as slime molds. While they are not traditional plant parasites, they are often encountered by growers in high-moisture environments. Their presence is generally a biological indicator of excessive soil wetness and poor organic debris management.
The organism exists primarily as a plasmodium, a mobile mass that consumes decaying matter. During its reproductive phase, it moves to the surface of plants or organic debris to form complex, coral-like, or feathery fruiting bodies that are usually white or pale yellow in appearance.
Crops most susceptible to their presence include vegetables and berries planted in poorly drained areas or managed in greenhouses with stagnant air conditions. Because they thrive on moisture and decaying organic material, they often settle on the stems or bases of plants that are already struggling with environmental stress.
The main symptoms involve the appearance of soft, gelatinous, or branched white growths on the surface of plant stalks. While the slime mold does not typically inject toxins into the plant, it acts as a physical barrier that restricts gas exchange, leading to tissue chlorosis and creating a micro-environment that invites secondary rot-causing bacteria.
Protection strategies are strictly agronomic. The primary defense is managing soil moisture and sanitation. This includes ensuring proper soil drainage, removing decomposing organic matter from around the stems, and increasing airflow within planting rows to prevent the prolonged dampness that these organisms require to complete their life cycle.
