Ceratiomyxales are an order of slime molds (myxomycetes) that, while not primary plant pathogens, are frequently observed in agricultural environments. These organisms thrive on decaying organic matter and can colonize crop surfaces, especially in humid or stagnant environmental conditions.

The causative agent exists as a plasmodium—a mobile mass of protoplasm that moves across substrates. In the context of farming, Ceratiomyxales act as indicators of poor air circulation and excessive moisture. While they do not typically infect living plant tissue directly, they can envelop plant bases and lower leaves, causing localized stress.

Symptoms of infestation appear as translucent, white, or yellowish gelatinous structures. These formations often coat stems and the soil surface. As the organism matures, it produces a dusty mass of spores, which can be easily dispersed by wind or splashing irrigation water, leading to further spreading across a greenhouse or field plot.

The primary conditions for development include extremely high humidity (often exceeding 90%), lack of ventilation, and the presence of accumulated plant debris. These organisms favor shaded and damp areas where soil moisture remains consistently high, providing an ideal medium for their lifecycle and reproduction.

The negative impact on crops is primarily due to the physical blockage of gas exchange through plant pores and the promotion of secondary bacterial rots. Their presence significantly stresses the plant, slows down photosynthesis, and can reduce overall crop yield if the infestation becomes systemic across the plantation.

To prevent and control outbreaks, consider the following measures:

  • Improve ventilation in greenhouses to reduce ambient humidity.
  • Maintain proper spacing between plants to allow for airflow and light penetration.
  • Remove all decaying plant matter and debris promptly to eliminate substrates.
  • Implement proper irrigation management to avoid water stagnation.
  • Use localized chemical control only if necessary, ensuring that cultural practices are the primary solution.
