Ceratiomyxomycetes are a unique class of slime molds that often inhabit decaying wood, bark, and leaf litter. While they are not classified as true plant pathogens, their presence on or near ornamental and agricultural crops can be problematic, often indicating issues with excessive humidity or poor garden hygiene.

The biology of these organisms is distinct, characterized by a vegetative phase known as plasmodium, which can move across surfaces. They feed on microorganisms and organic decay products. Their threat to plants is primarily indirect, as they can smother plant surfaces, block lenticels, or foster a microenvironment conducive to secondary rot infections.

Symptoms typically manifest as coral-like, white, or translucent growths on the lower sections of stems or damp soil. These structures are the reproductive phases of the slime mold, appearing rapidly during periods of high humidity. They are rarely found on healthy, vigorous tissue but may colonize stressed or damaged areas.

Environmental conditions are the primary driver of their spread. Constant moisture, shade, and a lack of proper airflow create ideal habitats. If a garden has high humidity and substantial organic matter debris, the likelihood of observing these slime molds increases significantly after rainy periods.

Control strategies for Ceratiomyxomycetes center on prevention rather than chemical treatment. Because they are not parasitic, fungicide application is generally ineffective and unnecessary. Instead, growers should focus on removing decaying organic matter, improving air circulation through proper pruning, and ensuring that irrigation systems do not keep foliage or stem bases perpetually damp.
