Description
Carrot cercospora leaf blight is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cercospora carotae. It is one of the most common and damaging foliar diseases affecting carrots globally, impacting both yield and the overall quality of the harvested produce.
The disease primarily attacks carrot crops, though it may occasionally affect wild species within the Apiaceae family. Once the fungus establishes itself in a field, it can spread rapidly, particularly under favorable environmental conditions that support fungal sporulation and dispersal.
Symptoms typically begin on the older, outer leaves as small, circular to irregular lesions with brown or dark centers. These lesions are frequently surrounded by a yellow halo. As the infection progresses, the spots coalesce, causing the leaf tissue to curl, wither, and eventually die prematurely.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on moisture and temperature. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures (around 20–25°C) are optimal for the growth of Cercospora carotae. The spores are primarily dispersed through splashing rain, irrigation water, and wind currents.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as severe defoliation prevents the plant from producing sufficient carbohydrates to develop healthy taproots. Furthermore, plants weakened by the disease are more prone to root decay and exhibit reduced storability, leading to substantial post-harvest losses.
- Rotate crops annually, ensuring carrots are not grown in the same field for at least 3 years.
- Use certified disease-free seeds or treated seed lots to prevent initial contamination.
- Remove and destroy all carrot debris after harvest to reduce the primary inoculum source.
- Improve air circulation within the canopy by using appropriate plant spacing.
- Apply preventive or curative fungicide sprays once the initial symptoms are detected in the field.
