Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Cercospora rubrotincta, a specialized pathogen that targets stone fruit trees. It is known primarily for inducing distinct leaf spot symptoms, which can lead to significant physiological stress in susceptible trees during the peak of the growing season.

Almond trees (Prunus dulcis) are the primary hosts for this pathogen. While the fungus is selective, it thrives in orchards where environmental conditions are favorable, potentially affecting both commercial plantations and small-scale plantings if sanitation is neglected.

The infection begins with the appearance of small, round, or irregular spots on the leaves. These spots typically exhibit a reddish-brown coloration surrounded by a darker margin. As the fungal infection advances, these lesions merge, causing extensive necrosis, which leads to premature defoliation of the almond trees.

Development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. The fungus overwinters in the plant debris on the orchard floor. High humidity, rain, and moderate temperatures during the spring and summer provide the ideal environment for the dispersal of conidia and subsequent infection of healthy foliage.

The primary damage caused by Cercospora rubrotincta involves the reduction of the tree's photosynthetic capacity. Early leaf drop deprives the tree of the energy required for fruit development and storage, leading to decreased yields, reduced nut quality, and weakened resistance to adverse winter conditions.
