Description
Fig rust is a widespread fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cerotelium fici. This fungus is a specialized parasite that exclusively targets the leaves of fig trees (Ficus carica) and several other closely related species within the Moraceae family. It is a common problem in humid subtropical and tropical regions, often causing significant foliage loss.
The disease primarily attacks the foliage, leading to premature leaf drop which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree. This stress directly correlates with a decrease in fruit production and quality, making Cerotelium fici a major concern for both commercial fig growers and indoor garden enthusiasts.
The initial symptoms include the development of tiny, powdery, yellow-to-orange pustules on the underside of the leaves. As the infection progresses, these pustules may become reddish-brown, and corresponding small yellow or brown necrotic spots appear on the upper leaf surfaces. Eventually, the infected leaves turn yellow, wither, and drop from the tree prematurely.
The pathogen thrives under conditions of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures, typically between 20°C and 28°C. Because the fungal spores require moisture to germinate, excessive overhead irrigation or poor ventilation in greenhouses significantly exacerbates the spread of the infection. Spores are easily disseminated by wind and splashing water.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Removing and destroying fallen leaves is essential to reduce the inoculum level in the garden. Protective copper-based fungicides or systemic products, such as those containing tebuconazole, are recommended during the growing season. Proper canopy pruning to ensure better airflow is a critical preventive measure.
