Description

Chaetocerotaceae is a family of marine diatoms that act as significant stressors in aquaculture and hydroponic systems. While they are not pathogens of terrestrial plants, their presence is considered a problematic issue akin to a waterborne disease due to the severe mechanical damage they inflict on biological organisms within the production environment.

The organism consists of cells with unique siliceous frustules equipped with long, sharp setae (bristles). These physical structures are the primary mechanism of injury; when present in high concentrations, they puncture the gills of fish and crustaceans, causing severe irritation, respiratory distress, and tissue lesions that often become portals for secondary bacterial infections.

Signs of an outbreak include the darkening or discoloration of the water, visible sludge-like deposits on technical equipment, and altered behavior of aquatic animals. In hydroponics, the primary symptoms include reduced nutrient uptake by plant roots, blockage of irrigation emitters, and a general decline in plant vigor due to the competition for dissolved minerals and oxygen.

The growth and spread of these diatoms are accelerated by high light intensity, optimal temperatures between 15°C and 22°C, and elevated levels of silicates and nitrogenous compounds. The absence of sufficient water circulation and lack of effective bio-filtration allow these organisms to reach bloom densities, quickly depleting oxygen levels in the water column.

Management and prevention strategies focus on multi-stage water treatment, including sand filtration and UV sterilization to neutralize the cells before they impact the livestock or crops. Controlling the chemical profile of the nutrient solution and maintaining rigorous sanitation protocols are essential to preventing blooms and ensuring the stability of the aquatic environment.
