Chaetocerotales is an order of diatom algae that, while naturally occurring, can become a nuisance in intensive agricultural systems such as hydroponics and aquaponics. In an agronomic context, they are categorized as opportunistic organisms that disrupt the chemical stability of the nutrient solution and hinder plant growth.
These organisms are primary producers that compete with cultivated plants for essential mineral nutrients. Unlike typical plant pathogens, they do not infect plant tissues directly, but their mass proliferation changes the biological environment, leading to nutrient imbalances and severe competition for light and space within the irrigation system.
These algae primarily affect crops grown in deep-water culture systems, vertical farming setups, and greenhouse water reservoirs. When nutrient-rich solutions are exposed to light, Chaetocerotales populations explode, quickly colonizing the surfaces of roots, pipes, and irrigation emitters, leading to potential clogging of delicate equipment.
Symptoms of an infestation include turbid, discolored water, a slippery biofilm on container surfaces, and brown discoloration of root systems. As the algae multiply, they absorb significant amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus, leading to nutrient deficiencies in the crop and an eventual drop in dissolved oxygen levels, causing root stress.
