Description

Chaetothyriomycetidae is a subclass of ascomycete fungi that are frequently encountered as causal agents of sooty mold diseases in various agricultural crops. These fungi are primarily epiphytic, colonizing the surfaces of leaves, stems, and fruits without directly penetrating the inner tissues of the host plant in a parasitic manner.

The fungus acts as a secondary colonizer, thriving on the honeydew secreted by sap-sucking insects like aphids, scales, and whiteflies. This sticky, sugar-rich substance provides an ideal substrate for the growth of dark-pigmented mycelium, which forms a dense, soot-like crust over the plant surface, giving the disease its common name.

Crop plants most affected by these fungi include citrus, pome fruits, grapes, and various ornamental species. While the fungus does not typically cause systemic infection or necrosis of plant tissues, its presence is highly detrimental because the black coating blocks sunlight, effectively inhibiting photosynthesis and reducing the overall vigor and yield of the plant.

Development and spread are favored by warm, humid conditions and the presence of significant pest populations. Poor orchard ventilation, caused by lack of pruning or dense canopy growth, exacerbates the severity of the infestation, as stagnant air increases the duration of leaf wetness and provides a stable environment for fungal colonization.

Integrated management is essential to control the impact of Chaetothyriomycetidae on agricultural production. The focus should be on prevention and suppression of vectors rather than the fungus alone:

  • Strict control of aphid and scale insect populations using integrated pest management.
  • Regular pruning to improve air circulation and light penetration within the canopy.
  • Washing fruit or foliage to remove the sooty layer if infestation is mild.
  • Application of contact fungicides to prevent colonization during periods of high humidity.
