Choanephora fruit rot

Choanephora fruit rot is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Choanephora cucurbitarum. This infection belongs to the category of wet rots and primarily affects members of the Cucurbitaceae family, including watermelons, melons, squash, and pumpkins.

The characteristic symptoms include the rapid appearance of water-soaked lesions that spread quickly. Infection typically begins at wound sites or on wilting floral parts. As the disease progresses, the infected tissue becomes soft and watery, eventually covered with a dense, fuzzy growth of gray or black spores and sporangia.

The development of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Optimal conditions for infection and spore dissemination include high relative humidity (above 90%) and warm temperatures. During periods of frequent rainfall or excessive irrigation, the disease can spread throughout a field in a very short amount of time.

The economic impact of Choanephora fruit rot is significant, resulting in direct yield loss and damage to fruit sets. Infected fruits become unmarketable, as the rot renders them soft and susceptible to secondary infection, making them entirely unsuitable for long-term storage or transportation to retail markets.
