Clover yellow vein

Clover yellow vein is a viral disease caused by the Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), a member of the Potyvirus genus. This systemic pathogen invades the host plant's vascular tissue, disrupting essential physiological functions and leading to significant metabolic disturbances that hinder the overall growth and development of the plant.

The host range of this virus is notably broad, primarily affecting leguminous species. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is highly susceptible, alongside various clover species and other pulse crops. These leguminous plants often act as reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the field environment throughout the growing season and between consecutive years.

Key symptoms include the classic yellowing of leaf veins, followed by the development of chlorotic spots, mottling, and mosaic patterns across the foliage. Affected plants often exhibit leaf distortion, stunted growth, and a reduction in the number and quality of pods. In severe cases, the entire canopy of the crop may show signs of yellowing, which significantly impacts photosynthetic capacity.

The virus is primarily transmitted by aphid species in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner. This means that aphids can acquire the virus from an infected plant after feeding for only a few seconds and transmit it just as quickly to a healthy host. Mechanical transmission through pruning or equipment contact can also contribute to the spread of the pathogen within the field.

Management strategies focus on breaking the infection cycle and minimizing contact with vectors. Essential measures include:

• Maintaining spatial separation from existing clover pastures or fields.
• Rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative plant hosts.
• Early-season insecticidal applications to reduce aphid populations.
• Usage of virus-indexed, certified seeds and resistant cultivars where available.
