Description
Clover yellow vein virus (CYVV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Potyvirus in the Potyviridae family. As a viral agent, it utilizes the host's cellular machinery to replicate, causing systemic infection that impairs plant development and productivity across various legume species.
The virus primarily impacts agricultural crops such as clover, beans, peas, lupins, and soybeans. Typical symptoms include interveinal chlorosis, which gives rise to the "yellow vein" appearance, mosaic patterns, leaf curling, and severe stunting. In sensitive cultivars, the infection may lead to significant yield reduction and poor biomass quality.
The biological cycle of the virus is inextricably linked to insect vectors, particularly aphids. Transmission is non-persistent, meaning the virus is acquired and transmitted by aphids during short feeding probes on infected plants. This mechanism allows for rapid transmission throughout a crop field even with relatively low insect populations.
Environmental conditions that favor aphid proliferation, such as mild winters and warm, dry springs, lead to increased risk of outbreaks. The virus often persists in perennial wild legumes or volunteer plants, which act as primary inoculum sources. These reservoirs serve as hubs for the virus, ensuring its survival from one growing season to the next.
Management and control of CYVV are challenging because there are no direct chemical treatments to cure infected plants. Consequently, strategies focus on minimizing virus incidence: controlling aphid populations using targeted insecticides, maintaining weed-free field margins to eliminate reservoirs, utilizing virus-free planting materials, and implementing spatial isolation to separate new legume crops from existing, potentially infected forage stands.
