Clover yellow virus (ClYV), taxonomically classified as a member of the Potexvirus genus, is a significant plant pathogen affecting various legume species. As an obligate parasite, it relies on the host's cellular machinery to replicate, causing systemic infection that disrupts normal plant development and physiological integrity.

The virus typically manifests through distinct symptoms, including interveinal yellowing, chlorotic mosaic patterns, and stunted growth. It primarily impacts clover (Trifolium) and related forage crops, where it undermines the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis effectively, leading to lower biomass production and reduced nitrogen-fixing capacity.

The lifecycle of ClYV is characterized by its ability to persist in perennial leguminous hosts throughout the winter, acting as a permanent reservoir. Transmission occurs through mechanical means, such as during mowing or animal grazing, and via specific insect vectors that carry the virus particles from infected to healthy plant tissues.

Development and spread are facilitated by environmental conditions that favor vector activity and high plant density. Once introduced into a field, the virus spreads relatively quickly if the host plants are stressed or if proper phytosanitary measures are neglected, particularly in areas with warm, moist microclimates.
