Description

Fusarium root rot, caused by the fungus Gibberella zeae, is a devastating soil-borne disease affecting various cereal crops. It targets the roots and crown tissue, leading to root rot and seedling blight, which significantly reduces plant stand and vigor in winter barley and other susceptible cereal species.

The pathogen persists in plant debris and soil for extended periods, acting as a constant threat to subsequent crops. By infecting the roots, the fungus disrupts nutrient and water uptake, which causes systemic stress to the plant and often leads to stunted growth or total plant collapse during critical developmental stages.
