The disorder specifically targets almond trees, causing visible imperfections on the hulls of the nuts. While the kernel inside may sometimes remain unaffected, the exterior damage renders the nuts unsuitable for market, leading to substantial economic losses for growers during the harvest season.
Symptoms initially appear as small, depressed areas on the fruit surface. Over time, these spots darken and the tissue becomes cork-like, firm, and necrotic.
