Description
The causative agent of the disease is the imperfect fungus Curvularia protuberata. This pathogen belongs to the class of deuteromycetes and is common in regions with warm and humid climates. The fungus is capable of surviving in soil and on plant debris, maintaining viability as conidia or mycelium for an extended period of time.
The main crops affected by this pathogen are cereal crops, including wheat, corn, and rice, as well as several types of technical and ornamental grasses. Of particular interest is the fungus's ability to enter into endophytic relationships with plants, though under certain conditions, it exhibits pronounced pathogenic properties.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as the formation of necrotic spots of various shapes and colors on leaves and stems, often surrounded by a dark halo. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, leading to premature death of the leaf blade, disruption of photosynthesis, and a subsequent reduction in overall plant productivity.
Periods of high air humidity and moderately high temperatures favor the development and active spread of the pathogen. Conidia are easily dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or during agricultural operations, infecting healthy plant tissues through stomata or mechanical injuries to the epidermis.
The damage caused by Curvularia infection is expressed in significant grain weight loss and reduced quality. Control measures include the use of resistant varieties, crop rotation, deep incorporation of crop residues, and the application of systemic fungicides upon the appearance of the first disease symptoms during early growth stages.
