Description
Cylindrocladium rot is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Calonectria colhounii. This disease primarily targets the root system and aerial parts of various host plants, leading to severe decay, wilting, and potential plant death if conditions favor the rapid development of the fungus.
Cranberry plants are particularly susceptible to this infection, often leading to significant economic losses in commercial production. The pathogen has a broad host range, infecting not only fruit-bearing crops but also numerous ornamental and nursery species, which increases the risk of cross-contamination in agricultural settings.
The disease manifests through distinct necrotic lesions on leaves and stems, often surrounded by chlorotic halos. In humid environments, the fungus produces visible sporulation on the surface of infected tissues, which appears as a white or yellowish mass. If left unchecked, these lesions merge, causing systemic decay of the plant vascular system.
Environmental factors such as high humidity, poor soil drainage, and warm temperatures are critical for the spread of the pathogen. The fungus persists in the soil and on crop residues, disseminating via contaminated water, infected nursery stock, and human activity within the field. Maintaining good sanitation is essential to break the disease cycle.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach, including the use of pathogen-free planting material and rigorous field sanitation. Fungicide applications, when used as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program, can provide control. Proper moisture management, such as installing adequate drainage systems to prevent waterlogging, significantly reduces the likelihood of severe outbreaks.
