Description
Cyst nematode (Heterodera spp.) is a microscopic soil-borne parasite that causes significant agricultural damage by infecting plant roots. The pathogen belongs to the Heteroderidae family and is characterized by a complex life cycle where the female's body hardens into a protective, resilient cyst. This structure ensures the survival of eggs and larvae in the soil for several years, even in the absence of a host crop.
These pests affect a wide range of economically important plants. They are particularly detrimental to chickpea crops, causing severe root damage and stunted growth, and also threaten cranberry plantations, leading to reduced yield and poor fruit quality. The ability of these nematodes to persist in the soil makes them a major challenge for long-term agricultural planning.
Symptoms of infestation often appear in patches within a field. Affected plants exhibit yellowing (chlorosis), wilting during the hottest part of the day, and overall stunted growth compared to healthy neighboring plants. A critical diagnostic sign is the presence of small, bead-like structures on the roots, which represent the cysts of the mature female nematode attached to the root system.
The development and spread of cyst nematodes are driven by environmental conditions and human activity. The cysts are easily transported through infested soil carried by farm machinery, tools, or run-off water. When soil temperatures and moisture levels become favorable, the larvae hatch from the cysts and actively seek out new roots to penetrate and feed on the plant's vascular tissue.
The damage caused by cyst nematodes is severe, often resulting in significant yield losses due to nutrient and water stress. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for control, including:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host plants or trap crops.
- Using resistant and tolerant cultivars.
- Maintaining high soil fertility to help plants cope with stress.
- Sanitizing farm equipment between fields to prevent local spread.
