Description

Siddiqi (lat. Siddiqi) is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the family Pratylenchidae. These microscopic organisms are known as serious phytopathogens that target the root systems of various crops, causing severe physiological disturbances. The genus is named in honor of the prominent nematologist M.R. Siddiqi, reflecting its significance in agricultural science.

The organism acts as a migratory endoparasite, meaning it feeds and moves within the plant tissue throughout its life cycle. Unlike cyst or gall-forming nematodes, the Siddiqi genus does not stay in one place; it destroys the root cortex as it migrates, leading to necrotic lesions, root browning, and eventually, the decay of the plant's vascular system.

The life cycle of the nematode comprises the egg, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The larvae penetrate the root system, where they feed on the cytoplasm of plant cells using their specialized stylet. Reproduction is typically rapid, allowing the nematode population to reach high densities in a short timeframe if the host plant remains present and environmental conditions are favorable.

Optimal development occurs in loose, well-aerated soils with moderate moisture levels and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Distribution of the pest across agricultural fields occurs via contaminated soil on machinery, irrigation runoff, and the movement of infected plant material. The nematode can also remain dormant in the soil for significant periods under unfavorable conditions.

Economic damage is characterized by stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield. In cases of heavy infestation, the root system is reduced to a stub, preventing the plant from absorbing necessary nutrients and water. Effective management and control strategies include:

  • Implementation of crop rotation using non-host or trap crops.
  • Usage of pathogen-free certified nursery stocks and seeds.
  • Application of soil fumigants or systemic nematicides.
  • Soil solarization or steaming practices in controlled environments like greenhouses.
