Description
Pathogen and disease type. The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Didymella protuberans, which belongs to the class of Ascomycetes. It is a pathogen that induces spotting and lesions on various parts of the plant, including stems and leaves. As a fungal disease, it infiltrates plant tissues, impairs nutrient transport, and can lead to significant physiological stress for the host plant.
Susceptible crops. This fungus primarily targets plants in the Asteraceae (sunflower) family. It can infect various herbaceous species and wild plants, which often act as alternative hosts. Because it is capable of saprophytic growth on dead organic matter, the fungus can persist in the soil and on crop residues long after the harvest is completed.
Symptoms and signs. The disease typically presents as dark, brown, or necrotic spots with irregular margins on foliage and stalks. As the infection progresses, these lesions expand, and tiny, black, pimple-like structures called pycnidia or perithecia may develop within the necrotic tissue. These structures contain spores, which serve as the primary inoculum for secondary infections during the season.
Conditions and harmfulness. Development of Didymella protuberans is favored by high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The fungus spreads rapidly in dense plant canopies where airflow is restricted and moisture remains on the leaf surface for prolonged periods. The economic impact includes reduced photosynthesis, stunted plant growth, lower yield, and overall decline in crop quality.
Protection and prevention.
- Implement crop rotation cycles, avoiding the planting of susceptible hosts for several years.
- Remove and destroy infected plant debris through deep plowing or burning where permitted.
- Select resistant cultivars or hybrids available on the market.
- Manage weed populations that may harbor the fungus.
- Apply prophylactic fungicide treatments when environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks.
