Unlike true pathogenic fungi, these organisms are generally saprophytic, feeding on decaying organic matter. However, they can climb onto living plant tissues during their active phase, potentially hindering the health of the host plant by covering its surface.

The host range for this organism includes various ornamental plants, turf grasses, and greenhouse vegetables. It is particularly fond of plants with dense foliage that touch the ground, as these areas provide a moist environment rich in organic debris, which is essential for the life cycle of the slime mold.

The primary symptom is the presence of white to grayish, chalky or powdery clusters known as sporocarps. These clusters appear on stems and leaves, often creating a crust-like layer. While these structures are technically external and do not penetrate plant cells like parasites, they can block the stomata, negatively affecting the plant's metabolic efficiency.

The development of Didymium squamulosum is triggered by specific environmental factors, primarily high humidity, persistent rainfall, and poor air circulation. These conditions allow the plasmodium stage to move across the soil surface and migrate onto plant parts. Greenhouse environments with improper ventilation are especially prone to outbreaks.

The damage caused by this slime mold is typically indirect, as it creates an unsightly appearance and may lead to secondary colonization by bacteria or fungi in the covered areas. Prevention is the most effective management approach, focusing on sanitation, reducing moisture levels in the immediate growing area, and ensuring adequate airflow to keep plant surfaces dry.
