Description
Diplodina blight, caused by the fungus Diplodina lycopersici, is a destructive plant disease characterized by the appearance of spots on foliage and stems. While more commonly associated with solanaceous crops, this pathogen poses a significant threat to strawberries, affecting their growth and fruit production capability.
The fungus attacks various parts of the strawberry plant, including the leaves, leaf stalks (petioles), and fruit stalks. By disrupting the transport of nutrients and limiting photosynthesis, the infection significantly impacts the overall health and vigor of the strawberry patch.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, necrotic spots that gradually expand and change color to light brown or grey. Inside these spots, small black structures known as pycnidia develop, which release spores that facilitate the rapid spread of the disease across the crop during favorable weather conditions.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of Diplodina blight. High relative humidity and warm temperatures create the ideal environment for the spores to germinate and infect healthy tissue. Poor air circulation within dense strawberry plantings exacerbates the problem, allowing the disease to thrive.
The damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced plant longevity, decreased berry size, and diminished yield. If left uncontrolled, the infection can cause extensive defoliation, leaving the plants vulnerable to environmental stress and opportunistic secondary pathogens.
