Description
Diporotheca rhizophila is a specialized soil-borne fungal pathogen responsible for severe root rot in ginseng (Panax ginseng). This pathogen primarily targets the underground structures of the plant, leading to significant economic losses in ginseng production. Because it can survive in the soil for extended periods, it poses a persistent threat to commercial ginseng fields and woodland cultivation sites.
The primary host for this disease is the ginseng plant. D. rhizophila attacks the root system, which is the most valuable part of the plant. Plants of all ages are susceptible, but the impact is particularly devastating in younger crops where the root system has not yet developed enough mass to withstand decay. This pathogen effectively disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the substrate.
The symptoms of the infection often start as small, dark lesions on the outer surface of the root. As the disease progresses, these spots enlarge, turning into soft, necrotic patches that can eventually cause the entire root to disintegrate. Above-ground symptoms include wilting, chlorosis (yellowing of the leaves), and eventual collapse of the stem. Upon closer inspection, a severely infected root will appear blackened, mushy, and may emit a foul odor.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Diporotheca rhizophila. High soil moisture, poor drainage, and low aeration are primary drivers for the rapid proliferation of the fungus. The pathogen thrives in cool to moderate temperature conditions typical of natural ginseng habitats. Furthermore, injuries to the roots caused by insects or human interaction during weeding or soil maintenance provide easy entry points for the fungal spores.
Effective management requires a combination of strict cultural and chemical practices. Growers should prioritize the selection of well-draining, previously non-infested sites for new plantings. Preventive measures include:
- Rigorous testing and decontamination of nursery soil.
- Strict hygiene protocols for tools and footwear to prevent cross-contamination.
- Improving soil aeration through organic amendments.
- Using biocontrol agents like specific strains of Trichoderma species.
- Maintaining proper plant spacing to minimize root contact and humidity buildup.
