These pathogens establish themselves within the host tissues, creating complex interactions that often result in serious tissue degradation and plant decline.
The pathogen is characterized by its method of reproduction, involving the formation of perithecia, which are small, flask-shaped structures that release spores. As a disease, it is typically categorized as a necrotrophic infection, where the fungus kills the host cells to extract nutrients, leading to localized or systemic tissue necrosis.
This family primarily affects trees and woody shrubs, including many species used in forestry and commercial plantations. The fungus typically gains entry into the plant through biological or mechanical wounds, such as pruning cuts, frost cracks, or insect feeding sites, where it then colonizes the xylem or phloem tissues.
