Description
Downy mildew, characterized by the staghead symptom, is a destructive plant disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora brassicae. It primarily impacts crops within the Brassicaceae family, with winter oilseed rape (canola) and radish being the most economically significant hosts prone to infection under favorable environmental conditions.
The disease is easily identified by its distinct symptoms. Initially, chlorotic spots appear on leaves, followed by a greyish-white fungal growth on the underside. The term staghead refers to the severe malformation of flowering racemes, which become thickened, twisted, and barren, resembling deer antlers. These structures are typically covered in a dense, grey layer of conidia.
The development of downy mildew is highly dependent on environmental moisture. High relative humidity (over 80%) and cool temperatures are optimal for the germination of oospores, which overwinter in soil or crop residues. Spores are dispersed through wind and splashing rain, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through fields during damp, overcast weather.
The impact of this disease on crop productivity is significant. The infection causes complete abortion of floral buds, meaning the affected stems fail to produce any pods or seeds. This results in direct yield losses, which can become catastrophic if environmental conditions remain favorable for the pathogen throughout the flowering period of the crop.
Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention and chemical control. Key strategies include:
- Implementing a 3-to-4-year crop rotation to avoid Brassicaceae species.
- Ploughing under crop residues to accelerate decomposition and reduce inoculum.
- Managing wild mustard and other cruciferous weeds.
- Applying systemic fungicides at the early budding stage when weather conditions favor infection.
