Description
Dutch elm disease (DED) is a highly destructive fungal infection caused by the pathogens Ophiostoma ulmi and Ophiostoma novo-ulmi. As a vascular wilt disease, it invades the tree's water-conducting tissues, effectively choking off the supply of water and nutrients to the crown.
The primary host for this fungus is the Elm (Ulmus) genus. Once the fungus enters the tree, it triggers a defense response that actually contributes to the tree's collapse. The blockage of xylem vessels leads to rapid wilting, leaf chlorosis, and eventual systemic failure of the tree's biological processes.
Symptoms typically start with wilting and flagging of individual branches during the summer months. A cross-section of an infected branch often reveals distinct brown or black streaks or rings in the outer sapwood, which are clear diagnostic signs of the fungus present in the vascular system.
The disease spreads primarily through elm bark beetles, which act as vectors, transporting fungal spores from infected trees to healthy ones during feeding. Additionally, DED can spread through root grafts between adjacent trees, allowing the fungus to move underground and infect interconnected root systems.
