Ceratocystis adiposa is a fungal species classified within the Ceratocystidaceae family. It is a significant plant pathogen known for causing various types of rot. Often associated with its anamorph Thielaviopsis paradoxa, this fungus is notorious in tropical and subtropical regions for its ability to devastate harvests of commercial crops, primarily sugarcane and tropical fruits.

The primary disease associated with this pathogen in sugarcane is commonly known as the pineapple disease. The infection manifests as the decay of setts, preventing germination or killing young shoots. Beyond sugarcane, the fungus affects a broad host range, including coconut palms, pineapples, and bananas, leading to significant post-harvest losses and reduced fruit quality.

The biology of Ceratocystis adiposa revolves around its efficient spore dispersal system. The fungus produces two types of conidia (endoconidia) that are highly resilient. The presence of perithecia allows the fungus to survive in diverse environmental conditions. It infects plants primarily through wounds, relying on moisture and nutrients within the plant tissue to initiate rapid colonization.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of the disease. The fungus thrives in warm, humid climates, with optimal growth temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. Heavy rainfall and poor drainage facilitate the movement of spores across the field.
