Description
Pesotum ulmi is the asexual stage (anamorph) of the fungus Ophiostoma ulmi, a devastating plant pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi and the order Ophiostomatales. This microscopic organism is globally recognized as the primary agent responsible for Dutch Elm Disease, a vascular wilt that has decimated elm populations across North America and Europe.
The host range of this pathogen is strictly limited to members of the Ulmus genus. Upon entering the tree, the fungus colonizes the xylem, where it produces mycelium and spores. The tree responds to the infection by plugging its own vessels with tyloses and gums to restrict the spread, which ironically results in water stress, rapid leaf yellowing, wilting, and systemic branch dieback.
The development cycle of Pesotum ulmi is heavily reliant on elm bark beetles (Scolytus and Hylurgopinus species) as vectors. These beetles pick up the sticky conidia of the fungus from infected wood and introduce them into the vascular system of healthy trees while feeding on young twigs. Additionally, the pathogen can spread underground through root grafting between neighboring elm trees.
Favorable conditions for the pathogen include mild temperatures and high moisture levels within the host tissue, which support the rapid colonization of vascular bundles. The disease is particularly virulent when beetle populations are high. Because the fungus can persist in beetle-infested deadwood, dormant trees often serve as reservoirs for future outbreaks, complicating disease management.
Effective control of Dutch Elm Disease requires an integrated approach to break the infection cycle. Key strategies include the rapid identification and removal of symptomatic trees to prevent beetle breeding, the creation of root barriers to prevent graft transmission, and the application of systemic fungicides via root flare injections for high-value urban trees. Furthermore, breeding and planting disease-resistant elm cultivars remain the most sustainable long-term solution.
