Banana tip rot

Banana tip rot, caused by the fungus Nattrassia mangiferae (often associated with Hendersonula toruloidea), is a significant post-harvest and pre-harvest disease affecting commercial banana production. The pathogen is known for its ability to cause severe deterioration in fruit quality, specifically in the Dwarf Cavendish variety, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers.

This disease is primarily characterized as a fungal infection that targets the distal end of the banana fruit. The pathogen invades the tissues through the flower end or wounds, initiating a rotting process that quickly progresses through the fruit, compromising its structural integrity and marketability. It is a persistent threat in tropical banana-growing regions.

Symptoms initially manifest as darkened, necrotic tissues at the tip of the banana. As the disease advances, the infected area softens, and a black, sooty layer of spores covers the fruit surface. In advanced stages of infection, the rot can spread internally, rendering the entire banana bunch unsellable due to rapid decomposition.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Nattrassia mangiferae. High ambient temperatures and prolonged periods of humidity provide the ideal environment for fungal sporulation and infection. Poor plantation hygiene, such as leaving decaying plant matter under the banana mats, significantly increases the amount of inoculum present in the field.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural practices and chemical control. Key preventive actions include maintaining proper plantation sanitation, such as removing old leaves and discarded fruit bunches that could harbor the fungus. Applying targeted fungicides during the flowering stage is essential for protecting the fruit during its most vulnerable phase.
