Emericella is a genus of ascomycetous fungi within the order Eurotiales, serving as the sexual reproductive stage (teleomorph) for many species in the Aspergillus genus. In an agricultural context, this fungus is recognized as a significant agent of decay, causing seed and grain mold during storage and acting as an opportunistic pathogen on crops weakened by environmental stress.

The fungus affects a wide range of host plants, including major cereals such as wheat, corn, and rice, as well as legumes and oilseeds like peanuts. It is particularly problematic in storage facilities where, if conditions are not carefully monitored, it can rapidly colonize stored products, leading to significant economic losses for producers.

Symptoms of infection are typically identified by the appearance of dense fungal colonies, which can vary in color from olive-green to dark brown or black. Infected seeds often show reduced germination rates, become shriveled, and may emit a characteristic musty, moldy odor. Prevention and management strategies must focus on strict adherence to storage protocols, including drying crops to safe moisture levels and maintaining adequate ventilation.
