Description

Powdery mildew of beet, caused by the obligate fungus Erysiphe betae, is one of the most common foliar diseases affecting sugar, fodder, and red beet crops globally. This fungal pathogen colonizes the surface of the leaves, drawing nutrients directly from the host plant's epidermal cells.

The primary symptom is the appearance of white, mycelial patches on the leaf blades, which eventually coalesce to cover the entire leaf surface with a powdery white film. As the disease progresses, the leaves may turn yellow and brittle, and dark black cleistothecia often appear within the fungal mat during the later stages of the season.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Erysiphe betae. The fungus thrives in warm, dry conditions, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C. While humidity is required for conidial germination, the disease is notoriously problematic in dry seasons, as the fungus spreads rapidly via wind-borne spores.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, primarily due to the reduction of leaf area available for photosynthesis. This leads to a substantial loss in root weight and sugar content. Untreated infections can result in severe yield penalties, often exacerbated by the premature senescence of the foliage, which complicates harvesting and storage.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling powdery mildew. Key strategies include:

  • Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars.
  • Maintaining proper crop rotation and spatial isolation.
  • Removing volunteer plants that serve as initial inoculum sources.
  • Applying fungicides during the early stages of the disease to prevent widespread outbreaks.
